South west St Catherine Member of Parliament Everald Warmington is defiant amidst suggestions he could be punished by his party over his actions in parliament Wednesday. The MP stormed out after heated exchanges over constituency boundaries, and yesterday told CVM members of his own party should be censured in parliament next week. The south west St Catherine MP insists he took a principled position because the discussions at the parish level on adding a new constituency to St Catherine weren’t taken on board in the electoral commission's report. He says what is in the report does not reflect the practical realities on the ground, arguing that some divisions have over 13 thousand electors while others have just over a thousand. He said they should be censured for not having allowed the divide for a vote, but he admits this censure motion wouldn't reach very far. Warmington was furious in parliament on Tuesday, his colleagues tried unsuccessfully to calm him, prompting suggestions he is on the verge of being punished by his party. But he scoffed at those suggestions.
Party general secretary Karl Samuda, who is by the way in charge of the government while Prime Minister Bruce Golding is at the Caricom meeting, told CVM he was very disappointed by Warmington's actions in parliament. He said a meeting will be held at the highest level of the party when Mr. Golding returns on Saturday, but didn't say whether disciplinary action will be taken. Mr warmington's word to his party is bring it on. Meanwhile, fellow St Catherine MP Fitz Jackson has refuted reports he also walked out of the sitting Wednesday. He did get up from his seat, but told CVM he went to talk with legal officers inside the chamber.
