News: Reports nurses’ industrial action may have yielded a casualty.

There are suggestions that industrial action by nurses last week may have largely contributed to the death of a patient, a matter which some say is being covered up. CVM has been receiving information the man jumped from a floor at the facility at a time when some nurses had stayed off the job. It seems the nurses' industrial action helped yield a casualty.

News: Principal of Hutton’s educational unit indicates school will pay CXC late fees.

Students at Huttons educational unit should know today whether they will be allowed to sit the CSEC exams for which they have paid. The school's principal Neville Hutton is to sign an agreement with the overseas examinations council, to pay some 4 million dollars in late fees. But what happened to the money in the first place?

The health sector could be affected by more unease as the government is seeking to change the implementation date for a salary increase for nurses in the pipeline since 2006. This is in the midst of an injunction forcing nurses to return to work, following protests about the delayed implementation of their reclassification exercise.

News: Parliament moves closer to establishing independent commission to investigate police shootings.

After a passage in parliament with 33 amendments the Independent Commission of Investigations moved one step closer to reality. A primary concern was: who will have ultimate responsibility for evidence at controversial shootings, and it was widely accepted that this should be the purview of personnel from the commission.

News: Court hearing on Finsac commission chairman set for late May.

The Finsac enquiry is set for further delays after Tuesday morning's decision for a full hearing to be held on May 25 into whether justice Boyd Carey is suitable to sit as its chairman. Chief justice Zaila McCalla presided over the hearing prompted by claims brought by four persons seeking to oust the retired court of appeal judge from sitting on the commission.

Sports: Jamaica Internal Invitational seeking to invite Berlin stars to participate at meet.

Negotiations are currently underway to include world 100 and 200m champion Usain Bolt, American speedster Tyson Gay, world 400m champion Sanya Richards and Britain’s 400m star Christine Ohuruogu for the fifth staging of the Jamaica International Invitational. The meet is scheduled for Saturday May 1 at the national stadium and will get underway with the high school relay events at 7:00 pm.
